Morse (Jedidiah) is born in Woodstock, Connecticut.

August 23, 1761

Jedidiah Morse graduates from Yale College, studies theology, becomes a minister, and comes to Boston, where he is installed as pastor of the First Church in Charlestown on April 30, 1789. Morse lives initially at today’s 201 Main Street, writes a geography textbook that sells more copies than any book in the U.S. except for the Bible and Noah Webster’s spelling books, and comes to be called the “Father of Geography.” A strict Calvinist, he is dismissed by his congregation in 1819. Morse dies in New Haven, Connecticut, on June 9, 1826.
